The crisis caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus also has an impact on the statistical production of INS. From this point of view, we are taking the necessary measures to limit as much as possible the impact on the long term. Measures are also coordinated within the European Statistical System and with Eurostat.

INS wants to ensure that its statistical data production will not be interrupted and their quality will not be affected by the measures we shall take. As a national statistical office, we map the Romanian society and economy, even during periods of crisis such as this one. Thus, we will be able to provide the public institutions and the other categories of users with the necessary information in the next period.

Data Collection:

1. from the population: We temporarily suspended statistical surveys based on face-to-face interview. We kindly ask the persons to whom data are requested to respond by alternative means (by telephone or electronic). Participants in the Household Labor Force Survey will be contacted and interviewed by telephone.

2. From economic units: We kindly ask the economic units included in the sample to continue sending the data requested by the INS through the eSOP platform. If this is not possible due to the temporary suspension of the activity, the data may be sent after the deadline.

Publication of the monthly index of consumer prices

INS treats with the utmost importance and constantly monitors the statistical data collection, a process that is confronted with disturbances generated by the extraordinary situation of the country and which requires interventions on data collection and methodological calculation solutions, in order to guarantee the continuity and quality of the information produced and disseminated.

The measures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 may lead to the impossibility of collecting consumer prices by the Regional and County Directorates of Statistics using the traditional method of collection (in-store observation). In this regard, it will be considered the centralized data collection, by accessing the data available in the online environment, but also the access to data published in the Price Monitor on food and fuels. At this time, statistical production will take place on a regular basis. Any subsequent decision will be communicated with maximum transparency and in a timely manner.

Internal measures adopted by the INS:

The INS is closely following the measures adopted by the Romanian Government.

Thus, the majority of INS employees work from home on teleworking basis. They can be contacted by email and telephone. All national and international meetings are currently canceled or are held through the online conferences.
