European Statistics Competition in Romania 2024-2025

  • Starting on September 1, 2024, the grant project "European Statistics Competition in Romania 2024-2025" commenced. The project will last 12 months, running from September 2024 to August 2025. Romania's participation in this international competition will be a first for our country; the organization of this initiative by the European Commission (Eurostat) has reached, at the European level, in the 2024-2025 school year, its eighth edition. The European Statistics Competition in Romania (ESC) 2024-2025 targets secondary school students and is organized by the National Institute of Statistics in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Its main objective is to promote curiosity and interest in statistics, to encourage teachers to use new materials for teaching statistics, and to highlight the role of statistics for students and teachers in various aspects of society. The competition is aimed at two categories of students from secondary education: students from 9th and 10th grades of the national education system (Junior Category) and students from 11th and 12th grades of the national education system (Senior Category).

Two rounds of national tests will be organized between January and March 2025, followed by the European stage, which will take place between April and May/June 2025. The tests will be conducted on a dedicated web platform, without requiring physical presence at any stage.

    1. Teams of 2-3 secondary school students (from any profile) will be registered for the competition. The members of a team must be from the same secondary school. For each team, a teacher will act as a "tutor," overseeing their activity. There is no limit on the number of participants or teams from the same secondary school, nor on the number of teams supervised by one coordinating teacher. A student can be part of only one team.
    2. The language of the national competition will be Romanian, while the European competition will be conducted in English.
    3. As part of the project, a Launch Conference will be organized in October of the current year, as well as an Award Ceremony for the winning teams and their guiding teachers, expected to take place in March/April 2025. In the fortunate event that teams from Romania win the European stage, a Ceremony (either online or in person) will also be held for this stage, with attractive prizes and diplomas awarded, similar to those given to the top-ranked teams at the national level, making participation worthwhile.
